Thirteen crewmembers from a fishing vessel are missing after the ship collided with a large cargo ship off the northeast coast of Japan.
The vessels collided about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Japanese coast guard rescue planes were deployed to search for survivors. Of the fishing boat’s crew, nine were rescued by a nearby vessel, and 13 still are missing.
A coast guard official said the smaller vessel may have sunk, but reports were unclear. The cargo ship and its crew were unaffected by the collision.
No information was available on the cause of the crash.
