International Maritime Bureau Live Maritime Piracy Report:
The International Maritime Bureau Live Piracy Report displays all Piracy and Armed Robbery incidents reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre.

The International Maritime Bureau provides this free service to the seafarer: a 24-hour IMB Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The main objective of the PRC is to be the first point of contact for the shipmaster to report an actual or attempted attack or even suspicious movements thus initiating the process of response. The main aim of the PRC is to raise awareness within the shipping industry, which includes the shipmaster, ship-owner, insurance companies, traders, etc, of the areas of high risk associated with piratical attacks or specific ports and anchorages associated with armed robberies on board ships. Maintenance Payments Should Be Enough to Pay the Bills:
This article from Professional Mariner Magazine by Captain Kelly Sweeney is an excellent piece about the current inadequacy of maintenance payment to injured seamen.

One highlight: "The Supreme Court decision pointed out that maintenance pays for the “food and lodging” expenses of an injured or ill mariner. U.S. law, however, doesn’t specify how much those payments should be. Today, American merchant mariners typically receive only $10 to $40 per day. In my opinion, that’s just not enough. I think that the U.S. Maritime Administration should establish a mandatory minimum maintenance rate for all U.S.-flag companies. This amount would be based on what it costs to live in the year 2010. It could then be automatically adjusted each year in accordance with the government’s cost-of-living index."

Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund:
In August 1990, when President George H. W. Bush signed the Oil Pollution Act (OPA) into law and authorized use of the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund (OSLTF). The Fund was created in 1986, but Congress did not pass legislation to authorize the use of the money or the collection of revenue necessary for its maintenance. It was only after the Exxon Valdez grounding that authorization was granted. The OSLTF is administered by the National Pollution Funds Center.
