Workplace Infections

Besides the risk of injury and occupational diseases, workers may also be exposed to infections like MRSA in the workplace.

Workers, who are required to be in close contact with other employees, may be at risk for a varying range of kind of infections. Sometimes, the kind of activity that the worker engages in may also contribute to an infection.

Farm workers are at a high risk for a host of infections.

Workers in a sewage treatment plant, or sewage maintenance staff may also be at a higher risk of exposure to micro orgasms, than workers in other industries.

The highest at-risk groups include nurses and staff at a hospital, who may be exposed to a wide range of infectious diseases.

Types of Infectious Diseases

One of the most dangerous infectious diseases that can spread quickly in a workplace is MRSA. Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus or MRSA is a variety of deadly staph that is resistant to traditional antibiotics, including methicillin. The most common settings where MRSA infections can spread, are hospitals and healthcare facilities.

These micro organisms can also multiply even outside of a hospital. These infections are often seen in workplaces, where workers are required to remain together in confined spaces for long periods of time. An example is a worker on a vessel or an oil rig, who may be required to sleep, eat and live with other employees in dormitories for several days together.

MRSA is typically transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. You can also contract MRSA if you use a contaminated person's towels or bandages. In some kinds of workplace settings, like a vessel or a rig, keeping personal belongings entirely sanitized and separate from other workers, may not always be possible.

Employers in any kind of setting where there is risk of MRSA or other infections, must make sure that workers are trained to observe high standards of hygiene and sanitation. Workers must also be provided with disinfectants, cleansers and soaps to keep infections at bay. Sanitized housekeeping procedures must be followed every day, and any contamination must be addressed immediately and aggressively.
