Neck Injury

Workers in certain industries may be a special risk for neck injuries because of the constant and laborious lifting that they do.

Neck injuries are commonly found in any American workplace, but are especially frequently seen in painters, electricians, and workers on oil rigs, offshore rigs, cargo ships, container ships and other vessels. Seamen, for instance, may be involved in work that frequently requires them to lift heavy objects. For instance, a deckhand who performs painting, cleaning and maintenance activities on a vessel, could be at a high risk for neck injury because of the constant strain on the neck muscles and ligaments.

Symptoms of Neck Injuries

Typically, a worker who has suffered a neck injury will experience the following symptoms

Whiplash is one of the most common neck injuries, and often occurs in rear end collisions.  When a person is in a vehicle that is struck from behind with great force, his head and neck are thrust forward at great speeds. This causes great strain on the neck muscles, causing a tear.

Unlike a head injury which may be easily visible, neck injuries may not immediately show visible signs or symptoms. There may be excessive pain or, at the other extreme, numbness and lack of sensation. Both of these are serious symptoms, and it's important that the person get medical care immediately before the condition worsens.  Neck injuries are often seen in conjunction with head and shoulder injuries.
