Darvocet, Darvon, Propoxyphene Recall Lawyers

Darvon, Darvocet and the generic Propoxyphene are dangerous, addictive and truly bad drugs that should have been taken off the market long ago. Efforts to ban this medication began more than thirty (30) years ago. For an excellent chronology of the efforts to this medication removed from the market, see Public Citizen's Report. Rather than recall the drug due to its dangerous side effects, the FDA chose a path of applying stricter "warnings" to the medication.
Many medical experts have found that Darvon and its progeny have some of the most unfavorable benefit-to-risk ratios ever seen for a drug. The main medical reasons being:
- Small amounts of this drug can cause lethal cardiac arrhythmias or heart rhythm abnormalities in even healthy patients at regularly prescribed doses
- Large amounts of the drug are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
- The drug is not that effective for pain relief when compared to over the counter medications, meaning it is not worth the risks
- Many otherwise healthy people are suffering heart attacks while taking Darvocet or Darvon or shortly thereafter
In November 2010 the FDA finally pulled all products containing propoxyphene (Darvon and Darvocet) off the market, and at least one expert issued a statement calling for a Congressional Investigation of the FDA, estimating that the FDA's delay cost 1000-2000 lives.
Propoxyphene is one of the oldest and most widely prescribed painkillers. Darvon was approved by the FDA in 1957 and Darvocet which adds acetaminophen gained approval in 1972. New data from testing conducted by manufacturer Xanodyne forced the FDA to conclude that propoxyphene's "overall balance of risk and benefit can no longer be considered favorable." Now the FDA has mandated that manufacturers remove all forms of the drug from the U.S. market.
