  • Transocean Explosion Survivors Could Face Risks from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

by Matthew D. Shaffer on April 26, 2010

More than 100 offshore workers, who were working on the Transocean oil rig during the explosion last week in the Gulf of Mexico, were able to make it to rescue lifeboats in time to avoid serious injury or death. These workers did not have to be airlifted, and were the lucky ones who managed to escape the raging inferno in time. However, that doesn't mean that these workers have been left unscathed in this tragedy.

The maritime lawyers at our firm have recently signed on a roustabout who was working on the Transocean rig at the time of the explosion. He suffers from Post traumatic stress disorder, and we are concerned that other workers like him who were not physically injured in the explosion could be at risk from PTSD, and not know it.

Post traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety-related condition that develops soon after a person has experienced a life-threatening situation. The situation could be an auto or truck accident, an industrial accident, an assault or violence of any kind. Surviving a major explosion or fire could definitely qualify as a life-threatening situating.

Posttraumatic stress disorder can often be confused with a variety of other conditions, including depression and anxiety. It's very important for Transocean oil explosion workers to understand that if they are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, fatigue, memory loss or flashback, these are not normal symptoms that will disappear on their own. You need to be checked out by a psychologist, and begin treatment.

    Symptoms of PTSD can include:

    • Memory loss
    • Flashbacks
    • Nightmares
    • Fatigue
    • Lethargy
    • Weakness
    • Depression

If you are a survivor of the Transocean explosion, and have been experiencing any of the following symptoms, it's important that you get professional help.

    • You suffer from a strange and unexplained lack of energy.
    • You begin to take refuge in alcohol or drugs.
    • You don't feel like talking about the experience.
    • You feel helpless.
    • You're on edge all the time.
    • You feel listless and uninterested in anything.
    • You don't' want to talk to family or friends
    • You're thinking it's a good idea to harm yourself.
    • You've been eating uncontrollably since the explosion.

Persons suffering from PTSD are at a high risk of developing other medical problems. Chronic anxiety, which is one of the symptoms of PTSD, could lead to hypertension and other conditions. Besides, PTSD can exact a serious toll on your relationships with your loved ones. The strongest relationship can feel the strain of a partner or father who seems absent, interested and uninvolved.

As Transocean oil rig explosion lawyers, we are very concerned about the development of such symptoms in survivors. If you are a Transocean explosion survivor, and have been suffering from the above-mentioned symptoms, get the help you need as quickly as possible.

The maritime lawyers at our firm have handled various cases where post traumatic  stress disorder was the only recovery option for persons injured in catastrophic accidents. Contact our lawyers to set up a free and initial evaluation of your case.
