Texas Distracted Driving: 15 Percent of Motorists Admit to Sex While Driving
by Stacey E. Burke on May 28, 2010
When GN Netcom's North America Division surveyed respondents in six countries about their most distracted driving behaviors, they were probably not expecting a significant number to admit to having sex while driving. Yet that is exactly what happened.
The survey which included respondents from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Russia and Germany found that at least 15 % of the respondents admitted to having had sex, while at the wheel. 29% of the respondents also admitted to having kissed someone while driving.
As far as distracted driving behaviors go, these are top of the list as the practices most likely to take all your attention away from the road. However, more motorists were likely to engage in other distracted behaviors, including texting. The survey found that 28% had engaged in texting while driving. 13 % admitted to applying makeup, while 12% admitted to reading or writing e-mails, 10% admitted to reading newspapers and magazines.
The least frequent distracted behaviors seem to be playing video games and shaving with just 5% admitting that they do so. The Japanese seem to be some of the most distracted motorists in the world, and frequently admitted to distractions from video games and music. The proper British seem to be the most focused on safety, with a high degree of awareness of the dangers of such distractions.
There is no way of knowing how accurate these findings are, and how truthful the respondents were in claiming that they had had sex while driving. However as Houston injury lawyers, who see our fair share of motorists glued to the cell phone and eating, while driving, the survey indicates that we have a long way to go in minimizing distracted driving.
