Man Dies Diving to Massachusetts Ship Wreck off of Dive Charter Vessel John Jack

A 27 year-old recreational diver went missing Sunday, July 24, 2011, off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.  The diver was part of a group aboard the dive charter vessel John Jack.  The dive group was exploring the wreckage of the Andrea Doria.

The Andrea Doria lies in about 200 feet of water.  It is an Italian luxury vessel which sank after a July 1956 sea collision with the Swedish liner Stockholm in thick fog and darkness.  It is reported by the Boston Globe that more than a dozen other divers have lost their lives while attempting to explore this wreckage.  Other media outlets claim the number of diving deaths is even higher.

The Coast Guard search crews joined in search efforts for the missing diver, but their efforts were called off after fellow divers located his body near the dive site.

The diver’s body has been located and the cause of death has not yet been determined.

“It’s never easy to see a search end this way and our hearts and thoughts are with the family now,” said Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Hall, First Coast Guard District Public Affairs.
