  • Katy, Texas Cheerleader among 3 Killed in Burning Crash

by Stacey E. Burke on December 15, 2009

Three people died early Sunday morning at approximately 6:44 a.m., after a Ford pickup truck missed a curve near the 2900 block of Katy Hockley Road, struck a pine tree and became engulfed in flames.  One of the deceased has been identified as Taylor Contreras, a 16-year-old cheerleader at Morton Ranch High School in Katy.

"It's possible that the driver tried to slow the vehicle down to make the curve," said Katy Police Department Capt. Gay Dickerson, who added that the roads were wet and the area was foggy at the time of the wreck.

“The identities of the three individuals have not been released by Harris County authorities; however, it is understood at this time that one was a current student at MRHS and that at least one of the others was a recent graduate of CRHS,” KISD Assistant Director of Communications Steve Stanford said in an e-mail to The Katy Times. “Grief counselors are currently on site at both schools to assist students and staff.”
