  • Despite OSHA Regulations, Scaffolding Safety Continues to be Elusive

by Stacey E. Burke on February 18, 2010

For workplace accident lawyers in Texas, it continues to be frustrating that we see workers injured in accidents that shouldn't even be occurring, let alone seriously harming workers.  Yet another scaffolding-related construction accident in Texas has left two workers seriously injured.

The accident occurred in Galveston. The two workers were working on renovating a shopping center on FM 517 when the scaffolding they were working on, gave way. One worker plummeted directly to the ground, while the other came down with the scaffolding.  The first worker suffered head injuries, while the other sustained injuries to the leg.

According to one of the shop owners at the center, she noticed that the scaffolding was very weak. She had wanted to inform Occupational Safety and Health Administration authorities, but didn't want to get involved in any trouble.  As Galveston construction accident lawyers, we were shocked to learn that the scaffolding had been placed on cinder blocks, and bricks.  Nether man was wearing a harness at the time of the crash, although we shouldn't be too surprised at this. After all, an employer who can try to save pennies by installing weak, unstable and shaky scaffolding, is hardly going to bother with "luxuries" like harnesses.  The callousness didn't end there. Neither of the two workers even wore a hard hat.

If we sound furious at this totally preventable accident and the fact that these two men have been severely injured because of an employer's callousness, it's because we totally are.  As construction accident lawyers in Texas, we hope the Occupational Safety and Health Administration decides to make an example of this case.
