by Stacey E. Burke on March 09, 2010
This past Sunday afternoon, Tiffany Bowman, 30, and Priscilla Gonzalez, 26, were involved in a major car wreck in Bastrop County, Texas. The two mothers were driving with their children, and now shockingly three Houston-area children are dead and two seriously injured.Bowman allegedly failed to yield, and her 2000 Dodge Caravan, carrying seven people, was broadsided on the passenger side by a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 truck driven by Michael Scholze, 19, of San Antonio, Texas. Only Gonzalez herself, and Bowman's 1-year-old daughter Apolinar Saldana, were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Saldana was in a car seat.
Three of Priscilla Gonzalez's children - Leah Gonzalez, 5; Noel Gonzalez, 8; and Paul Gonzalez, 9 - died at the scene.
Another of Gonzalez's children, Angie Gonzalez, 6, and Bowman's 1-year-old werelisted in critical condition at Dell Children's Medical Center yesterday evening. Angie's aunt spoke out saying that the child is fighting for her life.
Pricilla Gonzalez is hospitalized with a broken back and leg.
Investigators said the teen driver had the right-of-way and was not at fault for the wreck. No citations have been issued and authorities are investigating the case.
Parents of small children, and other who drive them - USE YOUR CHILD RESTRAINTS, SEAT BELTS, CARSEATS, protect these children who have no other way of being protected when on the road. If you want to risk your own life by not following the law and avoiding your seat belt, that is your own choice, but risking the lives of minors is criminal. Please think before you allow any child to ride even a short distance in your vehicle unrestrained.
