“I’ve represented some of the same families now for over 40 years. I think helping people is the purpose of the law.”

When Arthur Schechter began practicing law in 1964, he never dreamed where it would take him. Over the years, he’s represented local seaman’s unions, the National Maritime Union, individual foreign seaman throughout the world, the Indian Seaman’s Union, the Pakistani Seaman’s Union and more. He’s helped thousands of clients reach financially successful outcomes and start new lives, and in the process has had babies, boats and businesses named after him.
Among the many honors he has received are the highest civilian award from the United States Coast Guard and recognition as a Texas Super Lawyer. A founding partner of Schechter, McElwee, Shaffer and Harris, Mr. Schechter left to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Board Chirman of METRO and partner in a major national litigation firm, but is now back at the firm he started, serving as Senior Counsel and litigator on personal injury cases. Most recently, he was again named a Texas Super Lawyer by Texas Monthly Magazine, an honor shared by only 5% those practicing law in Texas.
He was most recently voted and recognized as one of Houston's Top Lawyers for the People by H Texas magazine.
